Reading suggestion from the Wondering Writer: Sara Lucaroni
In October 2014, a life-altering phone call came from the mountain of Sinjar, situated on the border between Turkey, Syria, and Iraq. This call would forever transform the perspective of a young journalist, shaping the way they report on the world. On the other end of the line was a Yazidi fighter, representing a small community that had been ravaged by the merciless acts of ISIS, a terrorist organization that would soon unleash a wave of brutal attacks in Europe as well. Amidst the chaos, countless women vanished, forcefully taken as slaves, while nearly half a million displaced individuals sought refuge and safety away from their homes. It is within this backdrop that the journey of a courageous young woman commences. Driven by her own determination, she embarks on a solitary mission to reach the ancient lands of the Yazidis. Her purpose is twofold: to shed light on the tragedy that has befallen a people previously unknown to the world, and to gain a deeper understanding of the malevolence that accompanies every conflict.
